Electric car choice quadruples in five years

The choice of electric vehicles and their average range has soared in the past five years, with every class of car now available with battery power, according to new research.

Almost one in four car models is available as a battery electric vehicle, with drivers able to choose from eighty fully electric models and nearly one hundred plug-in hybrids, data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reveals.

In addition, average battery range for new vehicles launching this year is almost three hundred miles (up from 210 in 2020), equal to three times the average weekly mileage.

Steve Beadle, head of the Grosvenor Group’s EV transition service 0Zone, said, “With the government’s 2030 deadline to end the sale of purely fossil-fuelled vehicles, we are seeing record demand for help and assistance with electric vehicle strategy. We are guiding fleets to make the best vehicle choices for their needs with a Total Cost of Ownership approach, which delivers significant employee and employer benefits in both the short and long-term.”
